Top Video Memes: Soulja Boy’s Crank That

As embarrassed as we all are to know the Macarena, we should be just as embarrassed to know how to “Crank That.” Back in 2007, American rapper Soulja Boy Tell’Em released his first single titled Crank That. Crank That quickly rose to the top of the Billboard charts, but as many will be able to admit, it probably wasn’t for the song. Crank That was catchy, but what was even more catchy was the dance that accompanied the song.

Known to most now simply as “The Soulja Boy Dance,” Crank That has embedded popular culture and somewhat remained. The official music video for Crank That was directed by a man named Dale “Rage” Resteghini and told the story of a music producer who becomes intrigued by the popularity of the dance.

Crank That went on to garner a 2007 Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song and the video became number one for the year on BET. Soulja Boy Tell’Em has become synonymous with the Crank That dance but his musical career is nothing to slouch at either. Since Crank That became an international hit, he has gone on to become part of a public debate with rapper Ice-T and collaborated on the hit Kiss Me Through The Phone. His next album titled Dre is set for release in July of 2010.
