When I think of 8-bit video game consoles, the first thing that comes to mind is the Nintendo Entertainment System. When I first discovered that wonder of modern technology, I was excited to be able to sit down and play games in my bedroom, rather than having to leave the house to visit an arcade. I was in geek heaven with those 8-bits, and I’ll never forget the hours of pleasure they brought to me. Now it seems that if you say “8-bit” to a teenager, they look at you like you’re nuts before whipping out their PSP to knock you on the head. It’s true though, they really existed. For die-hard fans like myself, a recent trend is emerging that takes some of our favorite things from today’s pop culture, and transforms them into classic, 8-bit videos. Now you too can relive the glory days with some of the best 8-bit videos that exist today. Squeeing is optional.
1. 8-Bit Dr. Horrible (Act 1)
How can you not love Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog? Neil Patrick Harris, Felicia Day, Nathan Fillion, and Joss Whedon got together to create this Internet sensation, and now you can relive it in 8-bit glory. It’s a total geek fantasy.
2. Pixels
While the entire video may not be 8-bit, it does a hell of a job meshing the real world with characters from some of our favorite classic games. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Tetris; all causing chaos in a way only 8-bit characters can, by smashing everything in front of them. The apocalypse isn’t coming, it’s here, and it’s in 8-bit.
3. 8-bit Twilight Eclipse Interactive
This series takes 8-bit videos to a whole other level, as it turns The Twilight Saga: Eclipse into a choose your own adventure type game. You can go through 13 different videos to try and play it, with a different outcome each time you play. Hint: at the end of the first one, choose the baseball option, the ending is hilarious, if I do say so myself.
4. Incredible Adventure – Darina
Leave it to the Soviets to create 8-bit wedding invitation for their guests. That’s exactly what this couple did. Watch as the bride battles through obstacles in order to get the groom. I give them an A+ for creativity.
5. 8-bit Thriller
The list wouldn’t be complete without a tribute to Michael Jackson, one of the biggest pop culture icons of our time. You might not want to watch this if you have epilepsy though, since Michael has this weird thing going on with flashing eyes.
