Radio Broadcasting

Why is Radio broadcasting so popular?
The radio is one of the inventions of technology that has proven the test of time. Since the invention by Marconi, this handy device has been around most homes, bringing programing, news, sports and weather alerts to the population at large. Most important events have been brought into many a living room, over the airwaves. Indeed, without a picture to look at, many listeners are able to recall vivid details of a broadcast. It was thought at one time, that television would make this media obsolete, but radio has endured, and will continue to entertain legions of fans, as new forms of broadcasting put it on an even stronger foothold.

How does a Radio work?
A radio works by receiving broadcast signals from a sending station somewhere off in the distance. They are electromagnetic waves in the air that are captured by the antenna of the receiving unit. These are frequencies that occur below the visible light spectrum, and can be altered or modulated. The basic model at first, had only an AM band, which stands for amplitude modulation. This is how high or low a signal strayed from its baseline. After a time, the FM band was introduced. It means frequency modulation or high many cycles of the wave move past a certain point in a given time period. Both of these bands operate to detect and transform the waves into sounds, that play through the speaker in the unit.

The growth of the FM radio band
The introduction of the FM side of the dial is often credited for saving this form of media. Up to this point in time, many folks had relied on the news and special programs received by their unit. However, with the movement towards television and its ability to provide both a sound and picture, many folks were swayed to this newer form of entertainment. With the popularity of rock and roll in the 1950′s, a new outlet was need to play this contemporary form of music. Thus FM stations were essentially selected to carry this particular niche.

What else is the Radio band used for?
Of course, radio is not only used for entertainment purposes. There are other varieties of this communication form, that are not often used by the general public. This includes short wave and military functions. In fact, during each of the World Wars, radio signals were vital to broadcasting the position of troops, and alerting commanders of enemy movements. In the Atlantic and Pacific, they were used to monitor ship movements and broadcast distress signals of sinking ships. A number of people would have perished, if not for radio operators, who were able to send out a call for help before their ship went down.

The new innovations that help radio remain popular
There seem to be new innovations to this old favorite coming out every day. The biggest of these at this time is the huge growth of satellite radio. This new standard is available in automobiles as well as stationary boxes. Featuring a number of stations in every possible genre, this type of broadcasting service allows the user a multitude of choices that are not currently available on the dial. The narrower bandwidth of the digital signal means that many more stations can be fitted nicely into the same amount of space. Discriminating consumers have flocked to this technology in droves. This is mostly due to the fact that signal is clear and the variety is almost overwhelming at times.

What other technology uses the radio band?
Almost all of the current technology types use some form of radio as a starting point. Television itself uses the AM band to broadcast the picture of a program, while the sound is transmitted as either am or fm. The two frequencies are slightly offset to avoid complications at the receiving end. Satellite systems, radar, navigation and other forms of communication all use the technology first credited to Marconi. It has been around for a long time and will continue to be used until something better comes along as a replacement. Who would give up their cherished radio at this point in time?
